Whether it’s the result of excessive branding, tried and true legacy, or simply word of mouth, if you are suffering from dandruff, someone less than two degrees separated from you is going to recommend you try Head and Shoulders. Now, I have tried quite a few of the various types of Head and Shoulders (Smooth and Silky, and I had a good long run there for awhile) but I am currently using Head and Shoulders Refresh Dandruff Shampoo, 14.2 fl oz.

A bottle of Head and Shoulders Refresh Shampoo

Refresh

True to it’s menthol claims, this shampoo leaves my scalp feeling tingly cool once I am out of the shower. It leaves me flake free as well! However there have been times when after drying my hair, my bangs look a tad oily like I have not washed them at all. It’s not generally super noticeable, so I tend to ignore this.

The real bad news about this shampoo came from my hairdresser. According to her, this shampoo has quite the dark side as well. When examining my hair, she told me my scalp was dried out and that I probably didn’t have dandruff at all. She went on to explain that shampoo can build up in your hair (the oily residue in my bangs perhaps?), and instead of cleaning the moisturizing, it strips the hair and puts on a waxy coating that gives it the illusion of shine.

If it weren’t for the residue I was already experiencing in my bangs, or the fact that the day after a wash my head is still itchy even though this shampoo claims to relieve said itch, I would think my hairdresser was just trying to get me to buy whatever more expensive brand of shampoo she uses.

Pros:

  • Delivers promised tingly feeling
  • Removes most dandruff, if not all
  • Inexpensive ($6)

Cons:

  • Leaves residue
  • Dries out scalp
  • Only gives the appearance of clean shiny hair??

In conclusion, I probably would not change shampoos had I not had that consultation with my hairdresser but given that I did and that my scalp IS still itchy, I am going to change shampoos.

Other Variations: Classic Clean, Smooth and Silky, Ocean Lift, Sensitive Care, Citrus Breeze, Itchy Scalp Care with Eucalyptus, Extra Volume, Clinical Strength and Endurance for Men

I tried a dandruff shampoo for dry scalp, cause winters are terrible for me here, and my hair started coming out. I changed REAL f–king fast.
