Everyone should have the following types of shoes in their closest: dress, athletic, casual, and stylish. Or, you can just have one shoe that fits all of these categories: Black and White Chuck Taylor All Stars. Otherwise known as, “Classic Converses,” “Chuck Taylors,” and “Chucks.”

What exactly are Chuck Taylors?

Three different views of my Chucks.
My old chucks.

Chucks are tennis shoes that originally started out as the shoe for basketball players. First known as “Oxfords,” these shoes were the shoe of the 70s. Until one day, a basketball player named, Chuck Taylor, decided to answers destiny’s call. Taylor became the top seller for these shoes and made some suggestions that took the Oxfords to a whole new level. The Oxfords style became:

  • Monochromatic shoe
  • Upper black canvas
  • Non-slip, rubber sole
  • White toe guard
  • Laces
  • Outer white stripes
  • Ankle patch (that was soon designed with Taylor’s name and signature.)

So, what makes these “Chucks” so important?

Well, I’m glad you asked. Chucks are completely versatile. They can be used for almost every event and occasion. When I was in high school, I was in the choir. And our choir director told us to wear hi-top, classic, black and white Chucks (that I still have and wear today, by the way) along with choir robes every time we performed at an event. That’s not all, though. I have also worn those same Chucks from high school at dance practice, dance shows, professional pictures, and job interviews. Chucks are the most versatile shoe I have ever owned and witnessed.

More pros:

  • Cheap
  • Classis/Authentic
  • Comfortable
  • Variety
  • Easy to find
  • Stylish
  • Versatile
  • Popular
  • Durable

But, there are some cons:

  • Flat
  • Falls apart easily
  • Poor quality
  • Expensive
  • Hard to clean
  • Uncomfortable

Here’s what Converse has to say:

“In 1917, All Stars sneaker gave the world a blank canvas. At first, it played basketball and then Rock & Roll and then everything else. It went along with athletes and artists, experimenters, rebels, visionaries, and now, even after everything it’s been, it remains anything you want.”

Aside from your average, everyday people, celebrities love Chucks as well. Celebrities like, Wiz Khalifa, Avril Levine, Omarion, Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Denzel Washington, and many many more have been seen wearing these versatile shoes. And if these celebrities have given into the All Stars craze, these shoes must be something worthwhile. Their versatility knows no boundaries.

Wiz Khalifa has even taken the Chuck Taylors and made them his main promotion for his career. With slogans like, “Taylor Gang or Die,” Khalifa has taken these remade Oxfords and turned them into the look of Hip-Hop.
