There is something simply wonderful about a waffle, especially a waffle that can be made from the comfort of your own home. The Chefmate 2-Slice Waffle Maker, a $7.00 deal at Target, offers homemade waffles, but in this case, you get what you pay for.

I originally bought the Chefmate 2-Slice Waffle Maker as a college student, excited to make my favorite breakfast at home and save a couple bucks in the process. While this waffle maker is a great way to save money, and its ability to stand upright for better storage is a great feature for a crowded kitchen, this model was a disappointment in that the product simply does not get hot enough to make good waffles. The Chefmate model boasts of nonstick coated plates, yet I found that even with cooking spray, the waffles tended to stick to the inside of the iron and had to pried off with a fork. The finished product was runny, and the batter dripped into the hinge, leaving a mess that was difficult to clean. Cleaning a waffle iron is already a difficult and annoying task, but the amount of cooking spray that this particular model requires made this cleaning job particularly unpleasant. The waffles themselves were gummy and unevenly cooked; the heat turns on and off intermittently, a fairly standard feature of waffle makers, but in this case one that prevents the plates from getting hot enough to cook the waffle evenly. The waffle maker is equipped with a ready light that turns green when your waffle is ready. This light is very dim and is not a good indicator of whether the waffle is ready or not – you would be better off just checking under the lid regularly than depending on the ready light.
Pros:
- Cheap and affordable on any budget
- Great for storage in a crowded kitchen
- Doesn’t generate enough heat to fully or evenly cook a waffle
- Difficult to clean
- Ready light is dim and unreliable
If you don’t mind waiting for awhile for your waffles to cook and have extra time to clean up the mess, then take advantage of this $7.00 deal. However, if you want quality waffles consistently, spend the extra money and look elsewhere.
